Living in a town called Alice

Had an uneventful flight from Perth To Alice Springs, the desert is red with a few rocks and seems endless. Both travellers are very tired and agreed on doing nothing at all. Maybe just one thing. K wanted to see the telegraph station and Eileen fancied the flying doctors. The station was a good walk away so armed with water bottles, hats and smothered in cream they set off at 10 in the morning. The weather had promised 36 so it seemed best to do the walk in the morning. It was so interesting that it took a couple of hours to get round it, there was a lot of history of the first pioneers and how the aborigines were treated later on, especially the "half castes" who were taken from their families and brought up in childrens homes. The walk back was along the other side of the Todd river which hasn't seen water since 1998 when it overflowed. They couldn't find the way so, armed with a stout stick to frighten the snakes, and with a bird of prey circling ominously overhead, K beat his way through the bush which was all of 3 cm high, over to the other side of the river. There a kangaroo hopped across the way (this is true) they found the track and arrived back in civilisation and had a stiff drink, well baileys, and a dip in the pool.

On a serious note the aborigines are very much in evidence here. A lady joined us for dinner and moaned hungry, hungry before being led away by the waitress. By the pool 5 kids turned up and asked if they could swim and they knew how to open the gate which we had difficulty with. There are signs up everywhere that drinking is not permitted out of doors and everyone, even K, has to show id to buy liquor. I was a bit upset about the lady at dinner but someone at the next table explained that she would have a pension. I feel very upper class enjoying myself behind locked gates while they stand outside looking in.
Alice does not run to putting pictures on the blog but it is free to use the internet which it isn't at other places. That is why I sometimes end rather abruptly. Tomorrow we must be up at 4 for our trip to Ayers Rock then we fly to Cairns on the 13th where we spend 3 nights. Hope we can show you some photos then.
I don't know if I can answer your comments but I read them all and enjoy them.

  1. I have read your diary so far. It seems you have a very interesting time with many different experiences. I really like to read about all your "tours".

Now I can tell you the name of my new grandchild. It will be Vanessa - the other two children chosed it! Nice name.

Send my regards even to K and I think of you now and then.
My own trip is coming nearer and nearer - you know the feeling! But I think all is fixed with it.

Otherwise my birthday party will be the 7th of november. I didnt get away from the duty having that party, so OK!! I am now preparing for that too and I sent out invitingcards the last weekend. The "yes-thanks" are droping in one by one.....

Me and Jossan are planning for the food and in the middle of that job I just remember Harri - at our work!! He has a friend having a catering firm. I think I will talk to him before doing anything. We have had that catering firm when having party at work several times and they are sooooo good making nice food.

Have a nice time both of you!!

  3. Big rocks and a yomp through the bush to a telegraph station. Sounds like just the sort of thing that I would enjoy. Not sure about the heat, but I expect Gillian would love it.
